Artist Description:
U-Turn Ushiro
While working for the fire department as a rescue team member, Ushiro encountered ceramics and soon began making his own pottery.
In 2021, he built his own all-underground anagama (hole kiln) in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture.
Using clay and stones dug in the mountains, he fires his vessels over a wood fire.
Focusing on the light and sound of something burning, and the way it melts and crumbles, Ushiro's creative activities center on the production of ceramic works. back.

When I first encountered his ceramics at CIBONE in Tokyo, I felt something extraordinary—an energy or power, perhaps.
His background is also fascinating, and his source of inspiration is rooted in his memories from his previous career. Akira Kurosawa once said, "Imagination is memory." Each piece he creates reflects his unique experiences, and it’s a joy to resonate with that. The pieces we choose in this way become special, cherished objects that we can hold dear for a long time. This spring, he had an exhibition at his Brooklyn store, and the feeling I experienced when I first saw his work in Tokyo came rushing back, allowing me to find one of my favorites. It has become a strong companion that I can cherish here in New York as well.
Personal Story:
This one bowl is perfect for all four seasons. It's especially ideal for eating noodles in the summer. The light blue color of this bowl complements various dishes beautifully, making even simple meals look fantastic without needing to prepare anything elaborate.
