My Cup Overflows

Artist Description:
Ryutaro Yamada
Ryutaro first encountered pottery while studying interior design at Tama Art University. When he became ill and felt the need to escape from reality, he found a pottery class in his neighborhood. Currently he uses a wood-fired kiln and a kerosene kiln to produce his pieces with variety of styles, including "kohiki","hakeme", "black glaze", and "yakishime".
Considering about the consumer using his pieces for daily life usage, he continues to create quiet and humble vessels that stand out more for their handiness and beauty of detail rather than eye-catching design.
Recommendation Reason:
This little cup immediately caught my attention because of it's timeless quality: Simple and unassuming, its quiet presence kept speaking to me each day as it sat comfortably perched on the shelf patiently waiting for me to bring it home. The dry, earthy texture of the clay feels generous and comforting in my hands. It also sits a little off balance on its footing, almost as if its nodding to me, which brings me a great sense of pleasure.
The form of this cup has a bit of an elongated footing, with a thin, chalice-like rim: Perfect for hot tea or a refreshing summer spritz, but my favorite use is for a nice dry red wine.
Message from the Staff:
Communing with a clay pot made by hand is a spiritual experience: The connection between nature, the creator, and the user is uniquely intimate. Handmade objects such as a pot can only speak to truth. They remain alive, but never begging to be used. Each piece quietly contains its own unique history and all the potentiality to experience it in its fullness if you so choose. Handmade pots recieve their fullest expression when used in the home. People need pots: Everyday you use cups, bowls, plates, and sip from your favorite mug to assist you in nourshing your body, so why not nourish the soul as well? A handmade pot has the ability to ground ones self in the present moment. If you do decide to commune with a pot, take a moment, enjoy a breath, then listen and know that the object you hold in your hands is enough, and perhaps in that moment let it remind you that you are enough too.
