The pentagonal shape of the chopsticks ergonomically guides the fingers to the correct way to hold the chopsticks as the three fingers holding the chopsticks fit into the odd-numbered pentagonal surfaces.
This provides a sense of stability and comfort in use.
The upper part of the chopsticks is painted in black (large) and red (medium), and the lower part is finished in urushi.
The combination of vermilion and black has long been used in lacquerware such as bowls, and the combination of colors is familiar to Japanese people.
Ironwood
Native to Southeast Asia, this wood is resistant to water and has excellent workability and finish.
When ironwood is finished and then lacquered with wipe lacquer, it takes on a candy-like, subdued color.
It is one of the main materials used by Edo Wood Chopsticks for a variety of chopsticks.

Note: Each piece is hand work by the artist, even the same piece will have a slightly different expression.
