Ikumi Matsumoto

Currently based in Shiga prefecture, Ikumi is an artist who creates beautiful ceramic pieces. Fascinated by ancient Chinese ceramics, she studied at Japan and then deepened her skills at Jingdezhen, China.

Having strong persistency towards texture and quality, she reprocesses the raw clay herself and painstakingly applies layers of color. Her three-dimensional ceramic pieces are reminiscent of a two-dimensional oil painting. Her works are characterized by intricate patterns painted with the “Kakiotoshi" (technique of layering with paint, glaze or color slips to keep the natural texture of clay). Some of her pieces have a “Gohonte" (delicate pink shades to appear in the glaze) pattern caused by kiln-forming.

Each piece is carefully crafted, requiring multiple processes and long hours of work, resulting in a high-quality and unique artwork with an oriental presence.

Note: Each piece is hand work by the artist, even the same piece will have a slightly different expression.
