Kabuki actor Danjuro Ichikawa VII first appeared in a costume with this pattern in his role as Yoemon in “Kasane. Along with Danjuro's popularity, this pattern flooded the city of Edo. The word “san-suji-goushi” even appears in old kouta (short songs).
