The shamisen is said to have been introduced to Sakai from the Ryukyu Kingdom during the Eiroku period (1558–1570). Biwa-playing minstrels later adapted the instrument and began performing it to accompany stories such as The Tale of Jōruri-hime. It eventually became widely popular among the general public when it began to be played alongside kouta, a genre of traditional Japanese song.
