A square bamboo basket sized to hold a whole loaf of shokupan, Japanese-style square bread. Its convenient handle makes it easy to carry from the kitchen to the table or take along for a day outdoors.
The basket belongs to a traditional style known as kakumono, constructed by assembling components made from heat-bent bamboo strips. This technique gives the basket its distinctive square form.
A Tradition of Bamboo Craft
In Beppu, Oita Prefecture, woven bamboo baskets and strainers are said to have been used as early as the first century CE. Over the centuries, bamboo craft developed into a valued traditional art form.
Today, these baskets are being rediscovered as practical everyday essentials, appreciated for their natural material and their place in a more environmentally and ethically conscious way of living.
