Bottle baskets were once used to carry soy sauce and liquor, which were mainly bottled. Even today, they can be used not only to carry wine bottles or one bottle, but also to hang plants in the empty bottles and hang them on a windowsill for interior decoration or to hang vegetables for storage.
Two sizes are available: the “large” fits 1500 ml bottles, a bottle, or three apples, and the “small” fits 750 ml bottles. The “small” size fits a 750 ml bottle and two apples. It is elastic in both length and width, so even slightly larger items can fit.
The “bottle basket” woven by Takaki Suba, the fifth generation, is tied with the auspicious Shippou knot.
It is also a wonderful way to present an entire package filled with festive wine or sake. The person who gives it to the recipient will be happy to know that it is filled with consideration for both the user and the environment at the same time.
Just like tatami mats, igusa changes to a brownish color after a few years, just as tatami mats burn. It becomes shiny with the grease from your hands, and the corners of the basket become slightly rounded and supple. After being used, the material can then be returned to the soil. It is also constantly breathing, so its softness changes depending on the humidity of the day. On rainy days, it absorbs moisture, and on sunny days, it expels it. On rainy or humid days, ikago may feel a little stiff. The shape tends to become frizzy, but it will soften again as you use it.
