A famous folk craft from Yonezawa, Yamagata, Sasano Ittobori has been handed down for over a thousand years. Using a single blade called a sarukiri, artisans hand-carve figures from koshia-bura wood. Popular motifs include roosters, wagtails, and hawks (otaka-poppo).
The rooster encourages early rising and diligence, the wagtail represents fertility, and the hawk implies rising fortune—linked to the values promoted by Uesugi Yozan, the local feudal lord known for his fiscal reforms and belief in hard work and thrift.
“Poppo” comes from the Ainu word for "toy," emphasizing the craft's deep roots in both local and indigenous cultures.
Note: Each piece is hand work by the artist, even the same piece will have a slightly different expression.
