From Tendo in Yamagata, famous for shogi (Japanese chess) pieces and woodcraft, the Hidari-Uma is a cherished lucky charm. During Japan’s post-war economic boom, it was said that every home had one.
The reversed “horse” character (馬) looks like a closed drawstring pouch, symbolizing money and good fortune staying in rather than escaping. The horse facing left also reverses the usual dynamic—the horse brings people, meaning it draws in popularity, customers, and wealth.
