Kokeshi dolls have a cylindrical body with no arms or legs and a round head, and are made by hand from wood. The face and costume patterns are hand-painted by craftsmen, and each region has its own unique characteristics. Originally made as children's toys, today they are popular as crafts and ornaments.
The origin of kokeshi dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). In 1940, the name “Kokeshi” was standardized throughout Japan.
