This is a traditional toy horse flute (Fue-uma) from Ryusenji Temple in Aichi Prefecture, measuring approximately 18cm in length.
It is a papier-mâché horse head mounted on a bamboo flute, once sold as a temple souvenir.
The temple enshrines Bato Kannon (Horse-Headed Kannon), and such toys were popular among visitors.
Though believed to have originated in the Edo period, this craft has now become extinct.
The neck bears the Ryusenji stamp, and a small clacker inside makes a rattling sound when shaken, making it enjoyable even for small children.
Some discoloration and signs of aging are present due to the passage of time.
Note: Each piece is hand work by the artist, even the same piece will have a slightly different expression.
