Product Description
Daruma are traditional Japanese doll that have been worshiped as a symbol of good fortune, success, and perseverance for centuries in Japan. This leather Daruma has the presence of a work of art, crafted using the traditional wet-forming method in which wet leather is dried and shrunk to create a three-dimensional shape.
The molds used for shaping are created with a 3D printer. This approach to craftsmanship—which seamlessly blends traditional and modern techniques—embodies Hender Scheme’s concept of “New Craft.”
It is crafted through a process of molding the front and back pieces separately, followed by cutting, punching holes, and sewing. After the sewing, the edges are trimmed and polished for a beautiful finish. In order to preserve the form, all of these steps are performed by hand.
Although this piece is hollow, a weight is placed inside the base to prevent it from tipping over.
Note: Each piece is hand work by the artist, even the same piece will have a slightly different expression.
