These are washi works by Keiichiro Hayamizu, who is active in Kagoshima Prefecture. Mr. Hayamizu creates all of his washi paper works by himself. He applies the washi he has made himself to wooden boards and other supports, and uses natural dyes and lacquer to give the paper strength and texture. He makes oriziki (folding mats) and mori vessels using layers of lacquer mixed with abrasive powder, Sakurajima volcanic ash, metal powder, and other materials. Despite their massive appearance, they are very lightweight and can be used to hold food as well as lacquerware.
