Ichigasho Yaki (Sano): Pottery Rooted in Local Materials and Climate
Ichigasho-yaki (Sano) is a style of pottery making that pursues an indigenous spirit by focusing on one specific location, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, and using only locally available materials to make pottery.
In a nutshell, Sano pottery is “pottery produced with the soil and fire of Sano, and fired with the local climate.
Thorough attention to materials
Clay: The clay used to make our pottery is collected in Sano City.
Glazes: The clay, stones, and ashes used for glazes are also found only in Sano.
Kilns also come from the bounty of the land
We do not use ready-made or firebrick kilns for firing. We use kilns literally “made of clay,” which are made of soil from the mountains of Sano. Firewood for fuel is also procured from nearby mountains. The form of the kiln is a simple yet powerful anagama.
