Trill: Atsuko Yukawa's Birdcage
On Atsuko Yukawa's balcony, birds freely flew in and out of birdcages, aiming for feeding dishes, creating a rather surreal scene.
The birdcage, with its gabled roof reminiscent of a Showa-era cultural residence, has its side walls cut away. Additionally, the sliding doors facing the balcony have small peepholes, allowing for stress-free observation of the birds.
In 1997, Yukawa left her busy corporate life behind and chose to become an independent illustrator. Yukawa's illustrations of animals and plants, which showcase her true talent, are supported by her careful and thoughtful observation of everyday life.
This is what gives her work its unique sense of tranquility, beyond mere precision.
The cover of the folded card features a bird resting its wings. However, when the card is opened, the bird flies out—a mechanism called a “トビダストリー.” “Birds reveal their patterns and characteristics only when they fly, so I wanted to express that. But actually, I love the appearance of birds when they're not flying, so I wanted to draw that too,” says Yukawa, who sought to fulfill her own artistic needs.
