Northen (Six)” is a collection of works by Daido Moriyama, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. Daido Moriyama was a graphic designer before becoming a photographer, and his photographs are “design-like. As a young man, he was drawn to the gritty black-and-white contrasts of William Klein and Shomei Higashimatsu, and through his work with Provoke and his masterpiece “Shashin yo sayonara” (Good-bye, Photography), he developed a strong style of his own. As he himself admits, he was also greatly influenced by the style of Andy Warhol, the master of Pop Art, and through the act of “copying,” he was a “designer” who made formal “design” and “art” more commonplace. This limited edition book was published on the occasion of an exhibition held in 2010 at the “Six” gallery of the Comme des Garcons Osaka store. The design over the wire mesh on the cover was imagined and set up for the actual exhibition.
