Kokeshi are unique wooden folk toys that originated and developed exclusively in the Tohoku region of Japan. Each production area has its own distinctive shapes and decorative patterns, and today kokeshi are classified into eleven traditional styles throughout Tohoku.
The body of this kokeshi is decorated with a daruma motif, an auspicious symbol in Japan. It embodies the wish to be like the daruma, which rises again immediately after falling, representing resilience and perseverance.
