Kijiuma is a traditional folk toy from the Hitoyoshi region in southern Kumamoto Prefecture, said to have originated approximately 800 years ago. According to legend, it was created by members of the defeated Taira clan who fled from the capital during the Heian period, as a way of remembering the splendor of Kyoto.
