About Kintsugi
Kintsugi is a technique of repairing broken ceramics and applying gold or silver or lacquer to the cracks. This technique, which emphasizes rather than hides scars, has been loved in Japan since ancient times as an art form that embraces imperfection and revitalizes it.
Traditional kintsugi requires as long as two months to complete, but this workshop uses food-safe epoxy, which hardens in a short time, making it an easy way to experience kintsugi.
About Yuko Gunji
Yuko Gunji is a New York-based artist who uses "Kintsugi", a traditional Japanese technique of repairing cracked ceramics by mending the damage with urushi (lacquer) and decorating it with gold. Her works include NEWVINTAGE, a fusion of Kintsugi and world antiques. She has restored ceramics for restaurants, pottery stores and interior stores while establishing her career by collaborating with ceramic artists. She also provides traditional “Lacquer Kintsugi” classes in New York and Japan to those who wish to learn the technique in earnest, and offers workshops on “Epoxy Kintsugi” which can be completed in a short period of time and meet a wide range of needs.
Note: Each piece is hand work by the artist, even the same piece will have a slightly different expression.
